I’ve been working on a series of fifty 6″x6″ paintings for The Sanchez Art Center’s 50|50 show, which opens August 28th. The theme that I came up with is “50 Ways to Tame Our Wicked Climate Crisis.” The paintings will be displayed in a large grid and will be sold individually or as a group. Needless to say, this is a very challenging topic. The bright spot is that with all the research I’ve done this summer, I’ve actually become hopeful, as there are so many people working hard to overcome this challenge we’ve unwittingly created for ourselves. I have come to realize that the most important thing we can do as individuals is to let our politicians and corporate leaders know that we feel we urgently need to act on this situation—everybody all over the world needs to do this. There really is no time to waste.
Come Together, While working on the paintings this summer I have seen us come together with Pope Francis’s Encyclical, Laudato si’, On care for our common home and President Obama’s Climate Change Action Plan. I’ve watched awareness grow and people beginning to to take action and make changes.
Navigate, while working on this project I’ve often felt as if we’re in a complicated maze, but in actuality it’s easy, there’s the choice where we live and thrive and are more in harmony with our environment and this other that more closely resembles a Mad Max movie, which is fun to watch but I don’t want to live there.
And then Grow, grow not only trees but grow inside. Sort of like when the Grinch’s heart grew in the movie “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. Our hearts have to grow like his eventually did, to love life and embrace it.
I’m excited to share with you these paintings, and the research that I’ve done for this project, if anyone should be interested in learning more about the project please contact me. I think the set would be a great educational tool to be displayed in a City Hall, a school or an environmental center, or in the home of someone who is passionate about our future. It would be my dream for the paintings to all stay together as one piece!
