Communication is something I’ve thought a lot about in my artwork and in my life, particularly now with the cochlear implant. This to me is the grand age of communication, it’s as if we’re flying as quickly as possible to a unknown destination and working as hard as we can to get somewhere, where to though? So my two individuals are sitting in silence that is not silence but filled with sound, they must face each other and communicate their own truths.
I have been studying ASL (American Sign Language) and thought a really good way to remember it might be to do artwork based on signing. So, for this series I’ve taken one of my favorite poems of my mother’s, “Stealing Corn”, and each line of the poem is signed in a piece of artwork. Since hands are one of the most challenging things to draw it has been a challenge, but I am having a great time with it! The hands in this piece sign “Faster than Time”.
