In my normal day to day life I have to follow all these rules—get my cat vaccinated, my Jetta smog tested (okay I’m bitter over this VW thing), all these things to “protect” my community and our society. But, in the meantime industry (oil, gas, coal and agriculture etcetera) are allowed, even subsidized, to release tons of carbon and methane into the atmosphere. I’m not really happy about this situation at all! If we want to transition into Green Energy—we need to tax carbon and subsidize Green Energy. If you are taking care of your fish and you messed up your chemicals while cleaning your fish tank your fish are all going to die! Keeping our habitat clean is not a hugely complicated concept to grasp!
Uncle Sam is such a iconic figure in American history, I couldn’t help but look to his history for answers in solving our climate crisis. This passage I found on Wikipedia best sums it up; “The image of Uncle Sam was shown publicly for the first time, according to some, in a picture by Flagg on the cover of the magazine Leslie’s Weekly, on July 6, 1916, with the caption “What Are You Doing for Preparedness?” More than four million copies of this image were printed between 1917 and 1918.” What Are You Doing for Preparedness? That’s still so appropriate.
Uncle Sam, it was hard for me not to turn him into a woman but I thought we could give the patriarchy one last chance to get it right! Sorry, I’ve been listening to Caitlin Moran to take my mind off the climate issues, it works very well!
When I was looking for solutions for “50 Ways to Tame Our Wicked Climate Crisis” it struck me that one of the most important things we can do is stick together. Being able to help each other through hard times, having strong resilient families and communities is what will make the difference of how well we adapt and how successful we are in changing our behavior. If we start attacking each other and blaming each other our resilience and ability to adapt weakens. To me, at the end of the day it’s not money we need but each other. Who would want to be alone in a world with a big pile of money……?
