I’ve been thinking a lot about transformation—about society and if we can transform ourselves before we cook ourselves. The Book of Symbols states pathology might be defined as the failure to initiate and respond to transformation. The question I’ve been asking myself is if we live in a pathological society? We (or most of us) know that climate change is real, but we can’t or won’t change our behavior. George Marshall in the book Don’t Even Think About It says it is because we have evolved well to being able to respond to threats when they are immediate but not when they are far off in the future. I think the future has come faster than we all expected!
Every bit of change brings with it a little bit of death, which is frightening but I have this hope that we can be like the butterfly and emerge from our cocoon capable of living in harmony with our world—I don’t think it’s going to be easy though. It’s something I care passionately about and I am fortunate to be able to attend the Climate Reality Leadership Corps training in Iowa next month. I’m planning on doing a series of projects through art about climate issues and am currently looking for a venue to host an exhibition of climate art. If you or anyone you know would like to be a part of this please contact me!
